Horseback riding in Texas doesn’t get much better than at Wildcatter Ranch & Resort. Located just 90 minutes from the Dallas/ Fort Worth Metroplex and near Possum Kingdom Lake, Wildcatter Ranch offers horseback riding as one of it’s main activities. There are plenty of places to go horseback riding in Texas, but three things really set us apart from all the other ranches; our wranglers, our horses, and our land.

Our well trained wranglers are friendly and courteous and more importantly they will make you comfortable riding your horse. Our pre-ride orientation will teach you the skills you'll need for a safe, fun ride. If you're an old hand at riding then we can review the skills that you already have.

Our Horse barn Policies and Procedures (Wildcatter Ranch General Riding Policies) apply to most activities at our Horse Barn. Please take a few minutes to read them, below, and most of your questions about horseback riding at Wildcatter Ranch should be answered:

WILDCATTER RANCH GENERAL RIDING POLICIES

  • Rides begin promptly. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early to complete paper work.
  • All trail rides have a mandatory pre-ride orientation. Failure to attend orientation will require rescheduling for a later ride if available.
  • All riders are required to read and sign a Wildcatter Ranch Liability Waiver. They are available for prior review on the web site and are supplied to ranch guests at check in. The wranglers can assist you in understanding the purpose and content of the forms and answer any questions you may have.
  • All minor riders under the age of 18 are required to wear an approved equestrian helmet while riding Wildcatter Ranch horses.
  • Riders must be at least 10 years old to join the group trail rides. Riders less than 10 years old who meet the requirements listed below may be able to participate in a private trail ride.
  • All riders must be able to demonstrate their ability to safely and consistently control their horse. Those riders not able to control their horse will have the opportunity to ride in the arena under the supervision of a wrangler while the rest of the group participates in the trail ride, assuming a wrangler is available to supervise the arena.
  • Group trail ride have the capacity to accommodate up to 12 riders.
  • The American Horse Council states a horse can safely carry 20% of their body weight. Therefore we have a 1200# horse that can carry a maximum of a 240# passenger.
  • At the barn manager’s discretion, trail rides may be cancelled due to inclement weather or any other unsafe riding conditions.
  • No double riding is allowed.
  • No smoking is allowed during the trail ride.
  • No alcohol consumption is allowed prior to/or during the ride.
  • Recommended riding apparel includes long pants, closed-toed shoes, and no loose clothing or bags. Purses, backpacks, and other valuables should be left in your room or vehicle.
  • Large cameras will not be allowed on the trail. Small cameras (that fit into a pocket) with a strap and that require only 1 hand for operation will be allowed as long as the rider can still maintain control of his horse.
  • Hats and sunscreen are a good idea in warmer weather. Hats with “stampede strings” to keep the hat from blowing off, should fit snugly on the riders head. Loose fitting hats will not be allowed. Hats may not be used in conjunction with riding helmets.
  • Riders will not be allowed to carry water bottles while riding. During warmer weather, water will be provided by the wranglers for refreshment along the trail.
